I just thought of a more succinct way to put it: the content needs to be amenable to the contexts (containers) in which it is to be flowed.

If Knopf has a solid identity, then I don't know what it stands for or what type of books it is. I think it has a solid reputation, but I'm a little shaky on the brand. That may just be me, though.

And, yes, smaller publishers who can project a coherent, strong brand could do well, especially if they embrace electronic publishing and build their customer databases so they can do B2C.

Knopf I think has a solid identity. And smaller publishers like McSweeney's or the Mormon presses.

I too was surprised to read the salt diatribe in the Penzey's catalog. At first, I thought it was not a good idea. However, as I've continued to read (and enjoy) the Penzey's catalog, I've come to appreciate the personal point-of-view that the owner consistently takes. It's refreshing and different to see something like this. And, for me, it just emphasizes that the company cares about the health of its customers even if it means disenchanting a few. Keep up the thought-provoking blog posts!

[...] First, the largest and perhaps best site, for professional connection is LinkedIn. LinkedIn is primarily use for making professional connections, having discussions within specifically industries (groups), asking and answering questions, and job searches (both looking for jobs and finding people). Overall LinkedIn is mostly for business connections; yet, as LinkedIn grows there is the possibility that more members of academia will join and make use of this site. A simple overview one how LinkedIn can be used by academia is give by Digital 3.0 101: LinkedIn for Academia. Also, see William Morris’ blog about how having academics on LinkedIn can be helpful for finding experts. [...]
